How a Family and ABA Therapist Teaches Life Skills to a Child with Autism and Down Syndrome

Meet Rob. He’s an 11-year-old boy who was born with Down Syndrome and was diagnosed with autism at the age of three. He loves music and staying busy.

Currently, Rob, his family, and his ABA therapist, Anita, are focusing on learning life skills. They want to make sure that when he gets older, he can be as self-sufficient as possible, so he won’t have to rely on his family to do everything for him.

An important part of the process involves getting reinforced for everything he does, as the strong motivation keeps him going. He is also learning to type in order to communicate with other people, as he is currently nonverbal.

His sister is also a fantastic support system for him, and she works well with him.

Watch as Rob and his behavior consultant for ABA therapy, Anita, go through life exercises such as putting on shoes, putting away groceries, packing a lunch, and walking the dog!
