Body Camera Shows Police Officer Calming an Autistic Boy in a SupermarketElizabeth Nelson
Sometimes the police get a bad reputation, but the vast majority of these men and women work hard to protect people from danger and keep everything running smoothly in their communities.
In the video below, officer Joe Dilillo feels the call to duty when he hears a child screaming in a supermarket. When he arrives on the scene, he discovers a child with autism having a meltdown while his parents struggle to control his erratic and violent behavior. Luckily, the officer is well-trained and knows how to handle a child with autism and is able to step in and lend a helping hand.
Dilillo quickly takes over the situation and begins to de-escalate it, gently calming the boy and restraining him as necessary to keep him from harming others. Once Dilillo has the boy calmed down, he ushers the entire family through the check-out line and to their bus stop outside so they can head home.
