Max was diagnosed with autism just months before his third birthday.

According to his mother, Katrina, Max would often run off during walks around the neighborhood, would physically lash out while feeling frustrated or anxious, and had trouble sleeping.

That’s why Katrina invited a National Service Dog named Chester to join their family.

Chester is a two-and-a-half-year-old lab-retriever mix, and was specially bred to be the calm, laid-back dog that kids on the spectrum like Max would have no problem getting along with.

Since introducing Chester into the family, Max’s behaviors have significantly improved. He is able to go on walks without bolting. His outbursts have, according to his mom, “disappeared.” Sleeping through the night is also less of a problem than it used to be—or at the very least, he doesn’t have outbursts during the night.
