Diaper Duty For All!Paige Turner
Ashton Kutcher recently joined the fight for gender equality by calling on business owners to put diaper changing stations in men’s rooms. This parenting double standard has many dads speaking out, but Kutcher’s high profile has brought the cause extra attention.
“There are NEVER diaper changing stations in mens public restrooms. The first public men’s room that I go into that has one gets a free shout out on my FB page! #BeTheChange” said Kutcher on his Facebook page.
Kutcher’s call out is part of a larger movement to normalize men’s participation in the care and raising of their children. Last year, California introduced two pieces of legislation that would have mandated baby changing tables in both men and women’s public restrooms. Unfortunately, it was vetoed by Governor Brown in September. “At a time when so many have raised concerns about the number of regulations in California, I believe it would be more prudent to leave the matter of diaper changing stations to the private sector,” Governor Brown wrote in his veto message. “Already, many businesses have taken steps to accommodate their customers in this regard.”
Despite what Governor Brown might think, things aren’t changing fast enough, and they need the government’s support!
The clueless, bumbling dad stereotype is definitely on its way out. Some new dads have taken to posting smelfies, selfies of themselves changing diapers, in order to show that guys stepping up to diaper duty is a real thing and something to be proud of. These dads want everyone to know changing diapers isn’t only a woman’s job!
Do you think that every men’s public restroom should have baby changing station? If this a problem you’ve faced?
