When These Bowling Ball Pendulums Get Released, Something Incredible Happens. You Won’t Want to Miss It!

Science is an incredible thing. When you know the intricacies of the interworkings of our universe, you can manipulate everyday objects to create something beautiful.

And that’s exactly what Appalachian State University’s Professor Jeff Goodman did for a group of young students at Camp Celo just last summer — and they got it on film.

Using seventeen bowling balls, each tethered by different lengths of cord to a single support, Goodman demonstrates the magic of math by creating a synchronized wave of oscillating pendulums.

So how does this phenomenon happen? Goodman’s explanation states, “The length of time it takes a ball to swing back and forth one time to return to its starting position is dependent on the length of the pendulum, not the mass of the ball. A longer pendulum will take longer to complete one cycle than a shorter pendulum.” The longer the experiment goes on for, the more interesting the pattern becomes!
